Introduction

This article will give you basic operational information for the Scouts Canada online learning area, the David Huestis Learning Centre.

What will I need to use the David Huestis Learning Centre (DHLC)?

To access the David Huestis Learning Centre, you must be logged into your myscouts account.

The David Huestis Learning Centre supports browsers Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, Safari and other current web browsers. It is recommended that you have at least two of these browsers available for use on your computer in case of any problems using the David Huestis Learning Centre with your primary browser.

Additionally, please ensure that you have Adobe Flash Player installed.

Can I take sessions in the David Huestis Learning Centre using a mobile device?

To successfully complete a course session, you must use a laptop or a computer.

You can access the David Huestis Learning Centre using most mobile devices however, you can use such devices only to review online learning sessions. Attempting to use an ipad or iphone to complete online learning will likely result in poor performance and inability to complete training successfully.

Do I have to complete all of my training at once?

No. The modules can be completed in separate sittings. If you are working on a session, it is strongly recommended that you complete the session before closing the course. If you need to close the training window, be sure to click “Save and Exit” in the course launch window.

Is there a recommended browser to complete your online training?

The Help Centre recommends that users access the David Huestis Learning Centre using the Google Chrome web browser.

Pro-tip! Clear the history and cache of your browser before starting your online training.

How do I know I have completed a session?

Click on 'My Completed Learning' for a complete listing of all the sessions you have been credited for.

I completed a session, but it does not show in 'My Completed Learning'. What should I do?

Ensure you complete the entire session.  At the end of the session, wait for the training window to close itself. If it does not close itself you can close the window yourself.

If this is unsuccessful, and the session does not go to 'my completed learning', please contact the Help Centre for resolution.

What sessions do I have to take to complete my training?

All new Scouters are required to complete Scouting Fundamentals training. Scouting Fundamentals is made up of seven sessions.

As well as going through a general introduction to Scouting, Scouting Fundamentals covers Accessibility training and Respect in Sport for Activity Leaders.

Upon successful completion of Scouting Fundamentals, Scouters are then invited to complete Wood Badge 1 for The Canadian Path before their second year of being a Scouter, please click here for further information on this training.

How do I access my sessions?

Launch 'My Learning Path' from your David Huestis Learning Centre home page under the Volunteer Ready tab.

'My Learning Path' is a tool designed to enable you to launch the sessions you are required to complete based on your role and manually keep track of your learning progress. Here you will find a variety of sessions including all of Scouting Fundamentals, Wood Badge 1 for The Canadian Path, and Group Committee Modules.
