What are Parent Helper/Parent Overnight & Adult Overnight roles?

These roles are temporary additional assistance for Scouters provided by traditionally parents, however, can be other adults connected with youth in the program.

These roles are offered for 5 occurrences total. These are purposefully temporary roles to contribute to our culture of Safety. Scouters are mentors, this means they deliver programming regularly and are in a position where youth view them as adults who they can trust. In order to be in this role they undergo training and screening that includes several steps.

Parent Helpers/Parent Overnights & Adult Overnight Helpers are simply helping out because it's needed, rather than committing to an ongoing role and becoming a mentor in a position of trust. They therefore don't require the same training or screening

For a comprehensive understanding of all volunteer roles reference our Volunteer Screening Procedure.

Parent/Adult Helpers are volunteers supporting the group who attend to assist the Scouters as program instructors, first aiders, etc. This is different than a fully screened Scouter role because they do not count towards Ratio or the Two Scouter Rule.

Parent/Adult Helpers are asked to agree to the Code of Conduct annually they also must have their role explained to all youth.

Parents and other adults who assist Scouters at more than five Section activities must apply to become a registered Scouter, be screened as per the Volunteer Screening Procedure and complete all volunteer screening and mandatory training requirements.

Who can add these roles?

Parent Helper/Parent Overnight Role and the Adult Overnight Role can be added by Group Commissioners and Group Registrars.

How to add a Parent Helper/Parent Overnight role

Login to MyScouts and go to the section page where the Helper is being added, next select 'Add Parent Helper'  in 'Org Options' from the left side menu.

When 'Add Parent Helper' is selected, a list of all parents attached to youth in that section will appear. Note that if a secondary parent (not holding primary parent role) has created MyScouts account but is not attached to the youth, he/she will not appear on the list of parents to pick from.** The Parent needing to be added as a Helper must be attached to their youth. Select 'Add Parent' option.

Next window will give an option to either pick Parent Helper or Parent Overnight role:

After the role is added, be sure to guide Parent Helper/Parent Overnight to complete their profiles in MyScouts including their emergency, medical and contact information.

**If a parent, needing the parent helper role, is not attached to their youth, you can establish connection by going to youth's profile, then to 'Edit Parents' under Admin Option on the left.

There will be an option to either create a new parent record or find an existing parent record and connect it to the youth.
